A child who grows up believing every boundary is open to negotiation may struggle when they meet a limit that will not move. They may feel unfairly treated or lack the resilience to accept a decision they dislike.

This does not mean parents should be rigid or cold. Research points to authoritative parenting, which combines emotional warmth with clear expectations. Children raised this way tend to do better in school, manage emotions more effectively, and build healthier relationships. They learn that being loved and being held accountable can exist at the same time.

The lesson is not to become a dictator. It is to be a steady guide. Saying "no" with kindness teaches children that limits are part of care, not a rejection of it. That lesson prepares them for a world that will not always negotiate back.
