Which Generation Really Deserves the Snowflake Label? Science Offers a Surprising Answer

Which Generation Really Deserves the Snowflake Label? Science Offers a Surprising Answer

The answer isn't quite as simple as you might think, with some complexities in the story.

The term "snowflake" has become a favorite insult tossed between generations, usually aimed at younger adults accused of being overly sensitive or easily offended. But new research suggests the label may not fit the way many people assume, and the generational divide might be less clear than the internet makes it seem.

Studies examining emotional resilience and reactions to criticism have found that older generations are not immune to the same sensitivities they criticize in others. In some experiments, older adults showed stronger negative reactions to being challenged or having their beliefs questioned than younger participants did. The difference often comes down to what people are sensitive about rather than how sensitive they are overall.

Researchers point out that every generation has faced claims of fragility from the one before it. Concerns about the softening of youth appear in writings going back decades, if not centuries. What changes is the subject matter: each era has its own flashpoints, from music and manners to politics and language.

The science also suggests that generational labels obscure more than they reveal. Income, education, and life experience shape a person's outlook far more than birth year does. Treating an entire age group as a monolith makes for catchy headlines but poor understanding.

So who are the real snowflakes? The evidence points less to a specific generation and more to a human tendency to see fragility in others while missing it in ourselves. The impulse to label and dismiss may be the most delicate habit of all.
