The First Corporate Psychopath Was a 17th Century Dutch Mutineer

A psychologist studying the wreck of the Dutch East India Company ship Batavia has identified what may be the first documented corporate psychopath: Jeronimus Cornelisz, an undermanager whose behavior before and after the 1629 shipwreck offers a chilling case study in malignant narcissism.

Cornelisz was a failed merchant and pharmacist who joined the Dutch East India Company to escape bankruptcy and possible prosecution. Aboard the Batavia he presented himself as charming and devout, but he was secretly plotting a mutiny. When the ship struck a reef off the coast of Western Australia, he saw his chance.

While the ship's commander sailed for help, Cornelisz took control of the survivors stranded on a small island. What followed was a campaign of terror. He ordered the murder of more than one hundred men, women, and children, consolidating power through fear and eliminating anyone who questioned him. His rule ended only when a rival group of soldiers overpowered him.

Researchers argue his profile fits the modern checklist for corporate psychopathy: superficial charm, grandiosity, manipulation, lack of remorse, and a willingness to destroy others for personal gain. The case suggests such personalities have always found their way into positions of authority, and that the language of commerce can mask a predator.
