A survey by Re-engage has found that 76 percent of the older people it questioned named Sunday as their loneliest day, challenging the common assumption that Saturday night is the hardest part of the week for people over 65. According to the findings, the quietest hours come on Sunday afternoon, when the house falls silent and nobody needs anything from them.
The result points to a specific kind of isolation that builds after a lifetime of being needed. For many older people, weekends once revolved around family visits, shared meals and the small demands of children and grandchildren. When those routines fade, Sunday can stretch into a long, empty stretch of hours with little structure and few interruptions.
The charity's finding offers a useful starting point for conversations about loneliness in later life, but it comes with limits. Re-engage has not published the sample size of the survey or explained how participants were recruited, so the 76 percent figure should be treated with caution until more detail is available. Even so, the pattern is consistent with what many support groups hear from older people, who often describe weekends as the point when contact with others drops off most sharply.
Campaigners say the finding underlines the value of regular, low key contact. A phone call, a short visit or a standing invitation to Sunday lunch can give the day a shape and remind someone that they are still counted on.
