Psychology explains why some people feel calmer on rainy days while others feel low or restless; what our responses to weather reveal about mood, memories and our surroundings

For some people rainy days feel like a peek into heaven, with the smell of mud and a hot cup of tea to cosy up with. But for others it can feel like their worst nightmare where they feel low and restless. Psychologists say both reactions are normal, and the gap between them reveals a lot about mood, memory and surroundings.

One key factor is association. If childhood rainy days meant safety, warmth and time with family, the sound of rain can trigger comfort. If they meant cancelled plans, loneliness or stress, the same weather can stir unease. Memory attaches emotion to weather, and those links persist into adulthood.

Personality also plays a part. People who are sensitive to sensory input often find rain calming because it masks background noise and narrows attention. Others feel trapped indoors and grow restless without sunlight and movement.

Environment matters too. A rainy day in a safe, comfortable home feels very different from one spent commuting or working outdoors. Light levels affect the body clock, and reduced sunlight can lower energy for some while inviting rest for others.

Researchers note that weather rarely acts alone. It interacts with sleep, stress and routine. Understanding personal patterns can help people plan around gloomy forecasts instead of being caught off guard by them.
