American Psychological Association warns against AI therapy

The American Psychological Association has issued a formal warning about the use of artificial intelligence in mental health treatment. The organization points to significant risks including the tendency for users to self-diagnose incorrectly and the potential for developing emotional dependency on chatbots. This announcement comes as more people turn to AI-powered apps for counseling and emotional support, often as a cheaper or more accessible alternative to traditional therapy.

According to Wysa, a digital mental health platform, the APA's concerns center on the lack of human oversight in AI interactions. Without a licensed therapist guiding the conversation, users may misinterpret their symptoms or rely too heavily on a machine for validation. The APA also worries that AI systems cannot handle crisis situations, such as suicidal ideation, with the same nuance and urgency as a trained professional.

While AI tools can offer immediate responses and reduce stigma around seeking help, the association stresses they should not replace human therapists. Instead, they might serve as a supplement to professional care. The warning aims to educate the public on the limits of technology in mental health, urging people to seek qualified human support for serious conditions.
